After 2 years of investigation, Special Counsel, Robert Mueller finally released the full report on the hacking allegations in the 2016 US presidential election.
2016 election investigation report: Russian hackers used BTC to buy hacking tools
The investigation was conducted to address the allegations of the hack to the Democratic Party, including the involvement of the now president Trump’s campaign team.
The report clearly stated that cryptocurrency was heavily used in the whole process. In fact, the entire system was paid for using Bitcoin.
The perpetrators were Russian agents, including those from Russia’s military intelligence agency, GRU, whom the report said to try to “capitalize on the perceived anonymity of cryptocurrencies”.
However, using cryptocurrency meant that it’s also possible to track the entire transaction, although it did allow them to “evade greater scrutiny of their identities and sources of funds”.
The investigators, which included blockchain developer and security researcher, Tim Cotten found out that the Russians used stolen and false identities while setting up some of the accounts used in the transactions, some of which were used to purchase servers and website domains used to hack the Democratic Party and publish the hacked materials.
To obscure their location, a virtual private network (VPN) was also purchased by the perpetrators using Bitcoin, as CNN reported.
Further finding revealed that the network used was similar with the one used to login to Twitter account, @Guccifer_2, which is known for having communication with Wikileaks.
Finally, Mueller stated in his report that after thousands of subpoenas and hundreds of warrants and witness interviews, he didn’t find the Trump campaign to be colluded with the Russians.
