The new deal will link the digital wallets of Coins.ph customers, which is said to be to the tune of 5 million users, with both domestic and international payments made through Western Union's network. This means virtually anyone in the world can now send money to family or friends in the Philippines and have it arrive almost instantly.
The Philippines is a prime market for this type of service as there are over 10 million Filipinos living outside of the nation. Already many citizens have been sending money home to family in the country, but now it will be easier than ever before.
Molly Shea, senior VP at Global Money Transfer, Asia Pacific, Western Union is quoted within the article:
"With this collaboration with Coins.ph, we are delighted to offer customers in the Philippines with an unmatched depth of services and capabilities, and convenience right at their fingertips."
The service is offered through an app, so even those without a bank account can be involved, further expanding the inclusivity of the project. Ron Hose of Coins.ph had the following to say;
"There are many overseas Filipino workers who send money back home regularly and are always looking for additional remittance options that will make it most convenient for their loved ones to receive money."
Even some on twitter were quick to point out this is an optimistic step forward for Western Union, who have had a choppy past with cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Here is a slide from a presentation I gave about Bitcoin to an auditorium full of doctors at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan in Jan 2015. Unsurprisingly, I received a lot of pushback at the time.

Ultimately this seems to be a great step forward for adoption of crypto and the people of the Philippines. Stay tuned to Chepicap for any updates!
